As a state representative in North Dakota, politician Mary Johnson was more focused on keeping the city of Fargo running smoothly than she was of her appearance.
Wanting her physical looks to reflect her achievements, the woman lifted herself from her seat with the state and landed in the chair of Christopher Hopkins, the Makeover Guy who’s known for his magical transformations.
Shedding decades with a stunning makeover, Johnson went from “basic Mary Johnson from Fargo” to “that girl,” leaving her husband completely stunned.
In 2019, North Dakota’s Mary Johnson (then 60), stepped away from her duties with the state into Christopher Hopkins’ salon. The genius stylist, who authored the book “Staging Your Comeback: A Complete Beauty Revival for Women Over 45,” was ready for Johnson, a former member of the North Dakota House of Representatives.
The woman, who until 2022 served on the standing committee, wanted a new look that represented her professional and personal goals. She also wanted to surprise her husband, David, who was later shocked by her big reveal!
“No purple no blue, no none of that…” she told Hopkins as she sat in his chair at the salon.
Shedding the years along with trimming her hair into a style that beautifully frames her freckled face, Hopkins also added a little red, blending her natural gray with blonde highlights to bring out her bright eyes.
When her jaw-dropping makeover was revealed, Johnson is seen perfectly coiffed with a fresh face of natural-looking makeup.
While recording the transformation, another client of Hopkins walks by off screen and says that Johnson looks about 42. Beaming with happiness, Johnson says that 42 was about “20 years ago.”
Next, she heads to the room where David is eagerly waiting for his lovely wife.
Surely, he would recognize her?
He did not! As Mary approaches him, his jaw drops to the ground and he says “WOW,” later confessing that he thought she was a different woman.
“I wouldn’t have recognized you,” he says laughing, unable to take his eyes away from his gorgeous wife.
As for Johnson, she’s thrilled with her new look. “I feel great,” she says. “I couldn’t feel better, it just exceeded everything I thought possible. You guys didn’t have much of a canvas to work with, but Holy Moly, what a great job!”
